7 Tips for Success in Online Classes

Online Classes

If you’re in college like I am, your classes are probably online now due to the coronavirus. Since taking classes virtually is very different from in person, I thought I’d share some tips for how to succeed in online classes. If I’m being 100% honest, online classes are not my favorite, but I’ve taken them over the years alongside my regular schooling to learn some tips and tricks.

-Work on Your Class at the Same Time Every Day

Even though these are strange times, it is important to establish a routine, especially with online classes. Completing your class at the same time every day will give your day structure and let your brain know when it’s time to get sh*t done.

-Get it Done Early

I’ve been taking Spanish online for the last 9 months and there’s nothing worse than procrastinating online class until the end of the day. Getting your class done at the beginning of the day will leave the rest of the day open. You’ll also be less stressed after completing your coursework.

Online Classes

-Write Down Due Dates

Even though your due dates are displayed on the site of your class, writing down due dates is essential. It’s easy to forget an assignment when you don’t have to hand in a copy in a physical place. That’s why I always write the due dates down in my paper planner.

-Work in a Productive Space

I have to admit, I’m super guilty of doing my online class while laying on the couch. When I choose to work at a desk, I always find I am significantly more productive and engaged in the activity I am working on. Leave your couch for rest and work at a desk or table to increase productivity.

-Take Notes

When you don’t have to frantically scribble down notes in a lecture hall, it’s easy to not take them at all in an online class. I’ve made the mistake of believing that I could be successful in an online class without taking notes because the information is always accessible. Writing your notes on paper will help engrain the material into your mind so you can pass your exams later on.

This is how bored I’m going to be doing my online classes haha (wearing Marc Jacobs gel liner in glamaroon)

-Get Dressed

Getting dressed will set a productive mindset for your brain just like working at a desk will. Since we’re all quarantined, there’s no reason to put your fanciest clothes on (unless you want to of course 🙂 ), but make sure you change out of those jammies! I will be wearing leggings and a sweatshirt. Also, make sure you do your skincare routine like you normally would. Even though we’re stuck in our homes, it’s important to take care of our skin. In my case, my skincare routine is one of the ways I practice self care.

-Ask Your Professor Questions

Asking for help from a professor can be intimidating, but they are there to help you! It’s easy to forget there is a teacher behind an online class. If you’re confused about the material or the structure of your online class, ask for help! You pay for school and the help that comes with it when you ask!

Have you ever taken an online class? What helped you be successful in an online class?

Oh no! At least you can learn from your readings even though you don’t have access to online courses. Hang in there!

Yeah that’s a good point! Online classes really aren’t my favorite so I have to be really strict with myself to be successful in them. Good luck with your online classes! Mine started yesterday 🙁

What a fun knit on you! I’m lucky I don’t have any classes to take but I do work from home and I agree, getting it over with early as possible gives you more time in the day! I’m trying to stick to my usual work hours so I finish at 4 which makes a difference I think!

Hope that your week is going well 🙂 I’m continuing to work from home this week.

    • Jill Gilbert | 26th Mar 20

Thank you so much! Getting done by a certain time is an amazing tip! Thank you for that. Since we’re all spending our days at home, the days seem to stretch on forever.I love the idea of separating the work day for relaxing at the end of the day.

I’ve been taking classes online for the last few weeks. The transition wasn’t this hard because I’m generally a really motivated person. I like spending my days in a productive way.
Great tips, I use a lot of them myself and they are really helpful.
    Have a nice day,

Reading this post takes me back to my school days…so happy they are way behind me hahaha!
I’ve never done online classes but feel like I would enjoy them a lot more than going to school.

Haha I can’t wait until those days are behind me! I am such a homebody, but in person classes do hold me accountable for actually getting my work done so I prefer them over online. But I guess I don’t have a choice now lol!

This post is just perfect timing as I just signed up for an online class in sustainable luxury 🙂
Its super interesting but sometimes I’m still lacking motivation though.. 😉

I love these tips on being successful in online classes. It can be harder because we are not pressured to pay attention as much as being there in person. The key to success is being proactive and making sure you actually learn the content. Participation is so important. This is how we make the content stick to our brains as well. I’ve taken an online class a few times when I was in undergrad. I liked it but it still took some work to do well in them!

    • Jill Gilbert | 29th Mar 20

Yes that is such a good point! It’s easy to zone out and not participate in online classes. During the first week of my zoom classes, I caught myself drifting off and looking at my phone and then I realized I was missing out on all the good information from my professors that I want to learn! I absolutely prefer in person classes to hold me accountable, but for now, I’ll have to police myself in my current zoom classes. One week down!

  16. Tania | 28th Mar 20

Omg I love this post because I’m currently enrolled in an online class and your tips certainly will help me stay on top of it. It’s so easy to get behind since you don’t have to actually go in person.

    Much love,

I really hope my tips help! So far, my classes that have been moved to zoom lectures have been easier than my online Spanish class that I’ve been enrolled in all semester. What online class are you taking? I hope it is going well so far 🙂

  18. Jessica | 30th Mar 20

I’ve read somewhere that the act of actually writing down notes can absolutely help you remember things, even if you don’t read your notes again. But of course, it’s always better to read your notes. Great tips dear!

    • Jill Gilbert | 31st Mar 20

Ah yes I’ve heard that too! It’s so interesting that physically writing commits information to memory unlike typing. I think this is especially interesting when considering that many schools are looking to add more technology!

That is such a pretty looking sweater, love the colours. I’ve done an online course lately though it’ not a class but I understand what you mean of taking notes. It’s a big help.

Thank you so much! What online course are you taking? Taking notes really does help encode what we’re learning into our memory.
