How to Choose Your College Major

Chose your college major

I thought it’d be fun to write some tips on how to choose your college major since it’s been awhile since I’ve written about school. When I started college, I never thought I would end up in journalism. I began college as an undeclared major because I truly had no idea what I wanted my future career to be. I hope this post helps any who are in the same boat! Let’s get into how to choose your college major.

My Path to Journalism

When I started college, I had a mild interest in psychology, but I wasn’t 100% sure that was the career path for me so I started off school as an undeclared major. My mom and sister are both in the psychology field so I figured I would end up following that career path too. I took my first psychology class during my freshman year of college and I hated it. I’ve always loved writing so I decided to take a journalism class the following semester and something just clicked for me.

To be honest, I didn’t really understand what journalism was before I took my first journalism class. I thought journalism was just reporting on local news. By taking more classes in the journalism school, I learned more about the craft and decided I wanted to go into the public relations branch of journalism. If I never branched out and gave journalism a try, who knows what I would’ve ended up stuck with as a major. I never felt guilty about starting college with an undeclared major, but when I finally declared my journalism major in my sophomore year, I had a clearer path to graduation and this was empowering for me. I’m currently finishing my junior year. I can’t believe next year will be my final year in college!

Choose your college major

How to Choose Your College Major:

Explore Classes that Spark Your Interest

This might sound obvious, but sometimes it’s can be scary to explore things you’re actually interested in for fear of failure. Don’t be afraid to take classes you’re even slightly interested in even if it’s outside your major. If you don’t end up enjoying the class, you will learn more about yourself and what you like or don’t like. Learning about yourself is never a waste of time.

Don’t Be Afraid to Change Your Major

I was never one of those people who knew what I wanted to be since I was a kid. I’ve never thought about a “dream job” and I think this enabled me to explore my interests. Many students have an idea of what they want their major to be when they get out of high school and then feel disappointed when they don’t click with those classes in college. I’m really happy I started out college undeclared because I had no clue what I wanted to do for my major. If you declare your major, it’s okay to change it! I know many people who have changed their major several times throughout college and that’s okay!

Your Major Doesn’t Define You

We have this ideal in Western culture that your job defines you and your personality. It doesn’t! I think of jobs and careers as means to fund my lifestyle, not who I am as a human being. You should be interested in your major and your work, but it doesn’t have to define you. It’s cool to have other interests outside of work and your major.

They teach us in grade school that whatever we choose as our major is what we’ll be stuck with for the rest of our lives, but who stays the same throughout their lifetime? Growth and change is natural over time. If you hate your job out of college, you always have the ability to change. I think it’s rare for someone to know what they want to do right out of high school.

I hope these tips help you choose your college major! College students and alumni, what is/was your major?

Journalism is such a terrific and awesome major to express yourself!
Totally agree, your major does NOT define you. It’s your character, work ethic, values, dreams, & hopes that define you, your major is just a learning path!

Yes, you don’t need a major on day1. It may take time to cultivate your talents and learn your strengths before you can decide the best college majors for you. Cool tips!

First of all can we appreciate this whole look and eye makeup? Stunning!
Secondly, when I was a student, I had no idea what major to choose. But taking different classes certainly helped me understand myself more. As you have said, it is totally okay to change your major or even work in a different field after graduating. I definitely changed job fields a few times and am glad that I did! Life is constantly changing and you’ve got to be flexible xx

Aw thank you so much Naya! I wasn’t sure if the pink was too bold, but I thought it might be fun to spice it up for spring! It’s definitely way too scary to pick your major right at the start of school. I’m really glad I took the time to explore classes too! Thanks for sharing your story about changing your job after college! It truly is okay to change through our lives and that includes jobs!

This is such a good post!! I think most kids should go in undecided. It always blows my mind that in the UK, they need their major decided while they are still in high school.

Thank you so much Jennifer! Sometimes I think college push us to declare right at the start of college so they can make more money. A couple people have mentioned how different it is in the UK! That’s really interesting!

Hello Jill, I hope you’re doing well and hope you enjoyed the long weekend!

I loved the subject of this post since I saw the title on Instagram! I would have liked to read this a few years ago while I was picking a career 🙂

I’d say it has to do with your current interests, but as you well mentioned we tend to change over time and that’s a natural thing. Studying a specific career does not mean that you have to commit to that career for life, there are thousands of unexpected paths where you can relate that knowledge to other areas 🙂 And as you said, changing majors is not a mistake.

Luckily you managed to take some psychology classes before entering to journalism, at least you had a sneak peek and that allowed you to see that maybe the first option was not the ideal option for you! So happy to read that you’re enjoying your major and good luck with all your upcoming projects!

PS: that look is sage green is incredible!

Thank you so much for reading my post Pablo! I think so many people feel locked into the first major they chose and then they feel like they’ve failed when they have to change it. We should definitely normalize changing careers and interests throughout our life! I’m glad I took that psychology class because it really helped me find my path.

Also, thank you about the sage green! I am obsessed with the color and I keep buying more and more sage pieces!

Aww I love this outfit and I love this post about being undecided. I’ve taken that same path at uni (Journalism, PR and Media), but I definitely think that it’s too early here in the UK to chose your lane.

We must have a lot in common 🙂 A couple people have mentioned how early people have to choose their majors in the UK! I had no idea what I wanted to do in high school

    This is really interesting.
I remember looking at American studies a while ago and I got so lost because the system is very different from France.
You’re so good at writing. I know you’ll make a great journalist.
And You’re so right your path doesn’t define you and it’s ok if you realize it doesn’t fit you.
And I’m so in love with your outfit. The pictures are beautiful and I love this jumpsuit.

Thanks for reading Margot! I love this jumpsuit too. Sage green is my favorite color! A couple people have said how different college is in Europe. It’s interesting that the college system is so different in Western cultures!
