These strange times leave us with a lot of anxiety to sit with while stirring around at home. Even though we may not be as busy and bustling as we used to be, it is important to find ways to self care during quarantine.
Foreword
Before we get into ways to self care during quarantine, I just need to tell you that whatever emotion you’re feeling about this pandemic is valid. Just one month ago, we were rushing through our daily schedule. Today, we find ourselves in our homes in the midst of a pandemic. That is a major change for our species that happened in a very short time.
It is only natural to feel anxiety, confusion, or whatever you’re feeling while navigating these uncharted waters. The loss of normalcy and our daily life comes with a grief that seems unexplainable. Allow yourself to grieve. You are human <3
That being said, let’s get into ways to self care during quarantine:
Like I said earlier, this pandemic and drastic lifestyle change comes with a lot of emotions. These days, I have a lot of trouble sleeping because my mind is buzzing with anxiety. I’ve always found journaling very therapeutic because it gives me time to process my thoughts and feelings while I write. Seeing my written thoughts makes them feel less daunting. When I journal, I love listening to Norah Jones or Iron and Wine.
I feel so grateful to quarantine in an era with technology that allows us to talk to our loved ones. Can you imagine if we had to write letters to each other that took a week to get to your family in the mail? Take advantage of Facetime to call your family and maybe even catch up with some friends you haven’t talked to in awhile. With everyone home, they should be easy to reach lol!
Whenever you are working or need time to yourself, try to find a place where you can be alone in your home. It is important to have your own space (especially for introverts) when we are all at home together. It’s important to make boundaries around your personal space.
It’s also okay to make boundaries in conversations. If you are feeling really stressed out about the the virus, it’s okay to tell whoever you’re talking to, “hey, I’m feeling really overwhelmed by the virus. Can we talk about something else?”
I also think it is important to make boundaries with your news consumption. A lot to people are blaming “the media” for so much virus coverage, but reporting is their job! It is your responsibility as a consumer to know when you’re feeling stressed out by the news and need a break.
I’ve talked about this a little in my last fitness post, but I don’t work out for the aesthetics. I work out because it has helped a lot with my anxiety and confidence. Since I’ve been pretty anxious lately with all this going on, working out has been the only time I can truly get my mind off of things. I have really been enjoying @rrayyme’s daily live workout sessions. They’re effective workouts that cater to all skill levels.
Since we are all bored and anxious, I think now is a really great time to dive into a creative outlet. Whether it’s painting, knitting, or organizing, I’ve always found creativity really calming. You don’t have to be “good” at art to be creative. I’ve also found adult coloring books to be extremely therapeutic if you don’t want to start something from scratch. Just remember, your art doesn’t have to be perfect!
When sh*t really hit the fan a few weeks ago, I noticed I felt extremely anxious when looking at social media (because other people were also feeling anxious). I also felt stressed when reading my emails because every email seemed to be a COVID update. On that day, I decided to lock myself out of Instagram and my mail app for 24 hours.
Giving myself a day without social media and email gave me the clarity to process my anxious feelings. Even if you can’t take a day off your phone for work reasons, give yourself at least an hour free of news or whatever app is stressing you out the most.
I think a lot of us feel frustrated/helpless right now because there is little we can do besides social distancing if we’re not medical professionals, grocery store workers, etc. I know a lot of people have lost their jobs during this time, but if you are in a position to help, there are a couple easy ways to safely give back to your community.
Here’s how you can give back:
-Order takeout from local restaurants
-Donate to your Local Food Bank or Animal Shelter
-Buy Gift Cards from Restaurants, Hair Stylists, etc.
-Social Distancing
In what ways are you practicing self care during quarantine?

I’m happy to hear you are getting some walks in! They are definitely refreshing and it feels so good to get out of the house. I can definitely say my dog has lost some weight with all these quarantine walks haha
Kaitlyn | 6th Apr 20
These are great tips! Your warm fashionable glow has me craving a dress up and get out kind of night. Ah *fingers crossed* that’s sooner rather than later. I’ve spent the last three days making a lot of face masks for healthcare workers! That’s been a great creative outlet in addition to feeling like I’m serving a purpose. Donating to your local food bank is a huge help right now too. We all have to support each other in every way possible! I hope you’re doing well too!

Jill Gilbert | 7th Apr 20
Aw thank you so much! I miss getting dressed up too. It’s been about a month since these pictures were taken and things have really changed since then… YOU ARE AMAZING! I love that you are supporting our healthcare workers by making masks. Thank you for what you do <3 I hope you are staying safe and healthy 😀

I hope you are hanging in there Margot! I’m happy you have been able to facetime with your loved ones and take some time away from your phone
Naya | 7th Apr 20
Love these pre-quarantine photos of you, Jill! So beautiful. Personally speaking – I have to agree that it is so crucial to have your own little space where you can just do whatever YOU want to hopefully recharge your mental batteries. We are lucky to spend this time with our loved ones/family but everyone needs to save some time for themselves. This is self care in its purest form xx

Thank you Naya! I’m glad I have photographic evidence of the last time I put real clothes on hahaha. I completely agree. As an introvert, I definitely need a lot of time by myself to recharge so I have been trying to go for walks by myself and I’ve made a separate workspace for myself to do my school work. I hope you are hanging in there!

Love your ideas on giving back. Super relevant. I’m enjoying this time to get creative 🙂
Love your look girl.

Jill Gilbert | 8th Apr 20
Thank you Yara! Even though giving back to the community isn’t putting time into ourselves, I think it’s a great way to feel less frustrated about feeling helpless, if that makes sense. What have you been up to creatively?
Andreea | 7th Apr 20
All these ideas are really great to follow! Especially to take a break from the news and to find a creative outlet. I do really love your dress! You look fantastic in it!

Thank you so much Andreea! It’s really easy to feel overwhelmed and afraid by the news of the virus. It definitely helps to limit the time we spend looking at it

Weeerrrkkkkk with that outfit doll! You look amazing! I love the color! These are great tips. I’ve taken the opportunity to get out of my creative funk and have been really working on my blog. I’m excited for the content and have been having fun with it. It’s a crazy time right now but we just have to do our part and stay home and also stay positive! Be safe and thanks for sharing doll!

Ahhh thank you so much Des! <3 You are so kind! I can't wait to check out your blog. I have definitely been in a creative funk as well. My boyfriend takes all my photos and we haven't shot in about a month because he was traveling and had to quarantine separately for 2 weeks. Hopefully we shoot some new stuff soon!
Maria | 8th Apr 20
Love your outfit, beautiful! Very information post. I completely agree about taking a break from the news and social media 🙂

Thank you Maria! It definitely helped me feel calmer when I took a break from social media. I felt like I had time to process my feelings without adding more anxiety to the stock pile.
Mel Hwang | 9th Apr 20
I love this! I’ve definitely been doing a lot of Facetiming myself. It’s been so helpful! Hope you’re staying well and safe girl!

We are so lucky to quarantine in an era with technology! I feel very grateful that we’re able to stay connected.
SundayDahlias | 9th Apr 20
I’ve definitely been doing more video calling nowadays to stay connected. Houseparty is a fun little app if you haven’t tried it yet!

Oooooh I will definitely have to check that app out! Thank you for the recommendation.
Bee | 10th Apr 20
I’ve been trying to take a long walk and exercise regularly. It’s something that I don’t usually do before, but realizing now that it’s good for my mental and physical health!
Jill Gilbert | 12th Apr 20
Exercising really is so helpful right now. Especially since we are so much less active inside our homes, it’s good to add a workout to our routines.
Nancy | 11th Apr 20
I love that there are so many opportunities for self-care during the quarantine. I feel you about the anxiety. All of these feelings are what make us human. We haven’t really dealt with this, and things can be worse. It is fine to have emotions! I love the different activities that you have listed. Journaling helped me a ton! Facetime and having virtual happy hours or anything similar is great. You get to see other people’s faces and connect with the outside world. I like that you have noted having boundaries. I don’t even pay close attention to the news… I just do my part and limit the spread. Love the ideas for giving back as well, especially when you can do it from home thanks to technology! Thanks for sharing all of these amazing ideas. Stay safe! I’ve been trying to balance everything so I don’t get burnt out at home 🙂

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment Nancy! <3 I think a lot of people feel confused why they feel depressed or anxious when we're all in our houses, but really this is such a strange and traumatic event for some. It is only natural for us to have feelings about it and grieve the loss of our normal lives. I have definitely been trying to stay away from the news to. I just to what's best to protect myself and my family. Updates on the spread of the virus don't really help me feel better or protect me (unless there's new medical advice from the CDC of course). I hope you are hanging in there! <3
Mica | 11th Apr 20
What a cute dress on you! I love the touch of lace! 🙂 I agree, with us all going through so many changes in such a short time, it’s important to take care of ourselves! I’m struggling to find time with the kids always at home but I’m trying to juggle caring for them and teaching them while the schools are shut with my regular work days, at least I get to work from home!
Hope that you are having a lovely Easter weekend 🙂
Jill Gilbert | 12th Apr 20
Aw thank you Mica! I don’t wear this dress very often because it’s very fancy, but I’m glad I had the chance to capture some shots of it before quarantine hit. I imagine that’s incredibly difficult to work from home AND teach your kids. That must be so overwhelming! I hope you are hanging in there and that you find sometime to take care of yourself <3

I love that you’re journaling about things you’re grateful for! What a great way to practice gratitude. Even though things are tough right now, we still have a lot to be grateful for <3
M | 14th Apr 20
Aw thank you so much for sharing these tips. I feel like everyone is giving advice on ‘how to be productive in quarantine’ or ‘things to pass the time in quarantine’ but nobody’s given tips on how to take care of our mental health. Because you’re right… it’s really hard to have positive thoughts throughout this whole predicament. I felt really sad. I especially love what you said about making boundaries – because as much as it sucks being alone all the time, I think having my own nice space would bring comfort in these times. Something I’ve been getting really into during quarantine is reading personal writing. I miss the blogging world. Thank you for sharing!

Jill Gilbert | 15th Apr 20
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment, Meghan <3 I think we all feel really overwhelmed by this experience, but confused at the same time because we're at home all the time so we don't think we should be stressed. I felt/feel really sad too. I really miss the normalcy of everyday life and it's hard to not know when all this will be over. Having our own space is so important, especially if you're an introvert like me!

It really can be overwhelming. I appreciate the journalists doing their jobs and keeping us informed. It’s definitely important to have boundaries around how we as consumers intake our news!
