Read, Watch, Listen: Quarantine Edition

Read watch listen

Since everybody is safe at home, I thought I’d share some interesting media to read, watch, and listen to during out time in quarantine. I already did a post on things to do at home during quarantine, but it’s always good to have thought provoking things to read, watch, listen to. I hope you enjoy!

Read

Yes, Even Introverts Can Be Lonely Right Now– As an introvert myself, this article was really relatable for me. During normal times, I always opt out of social activities to stay at home. Now that we’re home full time, I have definitely felt like I’ve spent too much time at home. This article gives some great suggestions for ways to connect with others if you’re feeling drained from Zoom.

Neighbors Not Practicing Social Distancing? Here’s What to DoIt seems like there’s two kinds of people during a pandemic: those who follow social distancing/stay at home guidelines and those who have been lax about social distancing. As I’ve been diligent about staying at home, I’ve definitely found myself feeling angry or judging others who are not practicing social distancing. This article gives great ways to take care of yourself when you see others not following guidelines.

F.A.Q. on Stimulus Checks, Unemployment and the Coronavirus PlanI was definitely feeling confused about the in’s and out’s of the stimulus package bill and this article really clarifies everything. It includes who gets stimulus checks, answers questions regarding stimulus check and college students, student loans, unemployment, etc.

Watch

Parasite (Hulu)- If you haven’t seen the Oscar Best Picture of 2020, you definitely need to watch this film. Parasite is an incredible Korean film that follows the storyline of a poor family who cons their way into working for a very rich family (like a parasite). This is probably the most unique film I’ve ever seen. The storytelling and cinematography is off the charts. It is a must watch and it’s also streaming on Hulu.

Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu)- Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon star in the newest drama, Little Fires Everywhere. This show explores race, relationships, motherhood, and lies at every turn! If you liked Big Little Lies, you’ll definitely love this show (that is also based on a bestselling novel).

SNL At Home– During this scary time, I have definitely found myself in need of some comic relief. Last weekend, the cast of SNL filmed solo skits and some skits over zoom that were actually quite funny! It was a lot different than the normal Saturday Night Live episode, but I still got some good laughs in. Also, if you’ve had any zoom meetings recently, watch this skit from the episode.

Listen

Harry Potter and the Sacred Text– This has been my favorite podcast for the past two years and I love it even more in quarantine. This podcast goes through each Harry Potter book chapter by chapter as if it were a sacred text. Even though they are treating the books as sacred this podcast is not religious. The hosts, Casper and Vanessa, discuss the actions of the characters through a different theme each week. I love this podcast because they have such thoughtful conversations about life and how we treat others!

YHLQMDLG by Bad Bunny– Even though I am far from being a fluent Spanish speaker, I love listening to Bad Bunny’s music. Since I am Colombian and most of my family is fluent in Spanish, I’ve always felt a little bummed about not being able to speak the language. Listening to Bad Bunny’s music helps me practice my Spanish and his music is so fun and dance worthy! YHLQMDLG stands for “Yo hago lo que me da la gana” which means “I do what I want”. Who doesn’t need that level of sass when we’re stuck at home?

Suga by Megan Thee Stallion- You’ve probably heard Megan Thee Stallion’s song, Savage, on literally every TikTok, but the rest of the album is really good too! If you like listening to rap and hip hop, you would definitely like this album. I love working out and/or cleaning to this album. I’m so glad so many artists are releasing their albums during quarantine.

Outfit:

Lulus Green Sweater ($46)

Levis Ribcage Straight Ankle Jeans in Tango Fade ($98)

Similar Head Scarf ($13)

I hope you enjoyed this edition of read, watch, listen. What have you been reading, watching, and listening to in quarantine?

I love SNL so much too! I love staying up on Saturday nights to watch the show. I’m so grateful they’re still keeping us laughing during quarantine.

I’m an introvert and I normally love being at home and alone time, but it’s definitely been nice to have video calls with other people now and then for a little bit of socializing. Recently, I just finished watching Itaewon Class on Netflix and I’m now looking for my next show to watch!

It can really be quite isolating as an introvert! We do need at least a little bit of people time. During normal times, sometimes I like being around people without having to talk to them lol! Oooo I will definitely check that show out! There’s definitely a lot of time to watch tv haha

  3. Radi | 20th Apr 20

Ohh my I was blown away by the movie “Parasite”. I even want to watch it again. So good!

Omg Parasite was SO GOOD! I watched it before the academy awards and I was so excited for the cast and crew when they won! After seeing that movie, I definitely want to watch more Korean films because Parasite was so amazing

Jill, thanks so much for sharing all of this! The first article your shared about introverts was so interesting! I am introvert myself and I really thought this was going to be easier for me, but it’s super hard and taxing. We all need some form of human interaction at the end of the day. I also loved that SNL skit—it is so accurate haha! We always spend like 10 minutes just trying to get everyone on the same page. It’s hilarious! I’ve also been meaning to start that Harry Potter podcast. Thanks again for sharing—these are great suggestions!

    • Jill Gilbert | 21st Apr 20

Compared to how busy and overwhelmed I was pre-quarantine, I don’t mind being at home, but there is definitely too much at home time. I think the thing I am missing the most is having a schedule and planning things. I am such a planner and now, who knows when we’re going to be able to make plans again! It really does take so long to get a zoom meeting started and there’s always so many technical difficulties. It’s hard not to laugh haha! Let me know if you try out the Harry Potter podcast!

  7. Liz | 20th Apr 20

What a fun casual outfit! 🙂 I haven’t had a chance to work through my netflix list, after a day entertaining my 4 and 5 year old I’m too tired even for that, haha! But I am trying to read a little before bed – one of my neighbours set up a virtual book club so I’m reading that book ready for our next online chat! 🙂

Hope that you are having a good weekend 🙂

    • Jill Gilbert | 27th Apr 20

Aw thank you so much Mica! I can’t imagine how busy and tired you are! A virtual book club is such a wonderful idea to stay connected with your friends and also more incentive to read! I hope you are hanging in there 🙂

  22. Nancy | 25th Apr 20

This is the best time to read, watch, and listen to so many things! Might as well since we have some more time to kill. My work has been talking about how even some introverts wish they can go back to the office at least once a week. It is SO ANNOYING when people are not following social distancing practices. At the same time, I’m not going to report them either.

Oooh! I was confused about the stim package as well. I was hoping that we can get a line item breakdown but it is what it is lol. OK. I need to watch Parasite!! It won so many Oscar awards. Ooooohoo I am a big fan of Megan!! Her music is great hahah. I am a big fan of Savage. Thanks for sharing all of these cool finds!!

    Nancy ♥ exquisitely.me

    • Jill Gilbert | 27th Apr 20

Thanks for stopping by, Nancy! It really is tough not be angry when people aren’t socially distancing. Sometimes I think rules are created for the people that don’t follow them… I haven’t really missed being surround by people at school and work, but I do miss having my home be a resting place for me. It’s harder to feel relaxed at home when I have to do all my school work here. You need to watch Parasite! If you have the chance to see it, I’d love to know your thoughts!

  23. Margot | 27th Apr 20

Oh I definitely need to watch Parasite and Little fires everywhere. Theses movies sound so good !
Thanks for sharing all theses suggestions.
I love to read you read, watch and listen article.
