The Olaplex shampoo and conditioner is one of the most adored hair washes on social media! I couldn’t wait to test the duo with my long hair that is prone to dryness due to the desert climate I live in. Let’s get into today’s review of the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner!
The Olaplex shampoo has a very thick consistency unlike any other shampoo I’ve tried. This was the most concentrated shampoo I’ve ever used. I have such mixed feelings about this shampoo. It’s nice how concentrated the shampoo is because I only had to use a nickel sized amount of product each wash. The bad thing about this shampoo is it was a bit drying to my hair. I didn’t notice it at first, but after months of using this, my hair became more dry and brittle.
While the shampoo was extremely concentrated, the Olaplex conditioner was not concentrated enough in comparison. I have long hair that reaches past my bra strap so I have to use a lot of conditioner no matter what product I’m using. However, with this conditioner, I had to use a ton of product for each wash because the shampoo made my hair brittle and dry. This conditioner was not a match for the winter and the dry, desert climate I live in.
The Olaplex shampoo and conditioner has a very clean, unisex scent. It smells a bit floral to me for some reason, but not in a feminine way. I enjoyed the scent a lot and I didn’t find it overpowering in any way. The scent does not linger in the hair after washing so I don’t think it would bother anyone sensitive to fragrance.
Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate– (say that three times fast lol!) repairs hair and prevents damage
*This shampoo and conditioner is free of sulfates. I exclusively use sulfate free hair products because sulfates are very stripping and damaging to the hair.
The Olaplex shampoo and conditioner retails for $28 per bottle ($56 total) at Sephora. The bottles have 8.5 ounces per bottle for $3.30 per ounce which is a pretty good price considering the bottles lasted me over 6 months with regular use. If you’re interested in trying the duo before you buy the full size, these babies also come in travel size for $14 ($4.24 per ounce).
While I wasn’t the biggest fan of this shampoo and conditioner, I thought the packaging was pretty good. The bottles are made of a soft plastic material that is very easy to squeeze. It was not difficult to get the last bit of product out from the bottle. I recommend storing the conditioner bottle upside down. The conditioner is very thick and you have to smack the bottle to move it if you store it right side up. I also enjoyed that I could see how much product was remaining because of the transparent packaging.
Overall, I was pretty disappointed in the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner. This is one of the most popular shampoo and conditioner duos out there, but I wasn’t impressed. The Olaplex duo wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t life changing and it was drying to my hair. I used up the full bottles so it wasn’t bad enough to get rid of. I’ve actually never seen a bad review of this duo other than Amy Chang’s (@bondenavant) review. She had a similar experience with the duo as I did and blames it on the silicones in the Olaplex formulas. I definitely enjoyed the Dry Bar Sake Bomb shampoo and conditioner much better than the Olaplex products.
I saw my hairdresser midwinter and complained to her about the dryness. She said Olaplex makes everyone’s hair super soft, but noticed the dryness in my hair too. She recommended the Oribe intense conditioner for moisture & control for my hair. It has been feeling significantly more hydrated since I started using it. Be on the lookout for my Oribe intense moisture shampoo and conditioner review in the future!

That’s too bad that the shampoo made your hair dry and brittle. I will now skip because I was actually looking at this brand.

I really thought it would make my hair more hydrated, but I was so bummed when it did the opposite. Definitely a pass :/

Hey Jill, how you doing? I hope everything is going well!
Oooh I really wanted to read this review because I know this is the most popular shampoo on social media as you said! I would love to try it but now I am not that sure after this review, actually that happen a lot with products that are so popular on social media…. maybe the hype is too high?
Sad to read that you hair ended up dry and brittle, despite the quality you noticed in the first use. Maybe it could help in another weather? I could give it a try, but maybe I can ask for a sample.
I’ll keep you updated! For now I am using The Ouai detox shampoo from time to time and the result is amazing!
Have a lovely weekend!

Thanks for reading Pablo! I was so surprised this duo made my hair drier. I think I was more disappointed because there is so much hype and praise of the brand. I would be curious to see how it performs in different climates too!

I haven’t tried this duo but would probably be the same for me because I live in similar desert dryness climate.
Glad to read your honest review Jill! Happy weekend <3 Radi

Hi Jill! Oh it is so disappointing when you invest this much money in a product and it doesn’t work! Even worse – it makes your hair dry or causes other troubles. For whatever reason I never understood the hype around Olaplex. I am more of a creature of habit when it comes to haircare: once I find that amazing formula for my dry hair and sensitive scalp (Briogeo banana coconut) I find it hard to convince myself to try something else. Look forward to your Oribe review! xx

I completely agree! I rarely ever heat style my hair so I was really bummed to see my ends turn so dry and crunchy when I was trying my best to take care of it. I need to try the Briogeo banana shampoo and conditioner. I liked the apple kale one and I like Briogeo in general!

This is quite frustrating when a product is popular and it seems like it works very well for everybody but not you.
This is so sad it dried up your hair but it sounds good you’re able to only use a little amount at every watch.
thanks for sharing your honest review with us.
And your products pictures are really beautiful.
