Nécessaire products caught my eye because I kept seeing them all over my insta feed so I thought I would give them a try myself! I was also really attracted to their sustainable packaging and clean beauty ingredients that had been so hyped. 

About Nécessaire

Nécessaire is a brand that is committed to making clean beauty products for the body that actually work. They currently sell a body lotion, a body exfoliator, a body wash, a body serum, and a sex gel. All the body care products come in fragrance-free, sandalwood, and eucalyptus that are meant to be unisex scents. 

I got the sandalwood set ($60) which came with the body lotion, the body exfoliator, and the body wash. All of the products come in recyclable tubes and they ship their products in recycled cardboard. Nécessaire has a list of ingredients (The No List) that they never use in their products to keep them clean. Pretty impressive, right?

The Body Exfoliator ($30)

When I bought this set, I thought the body exfoliator would be a fun scrub that wouldn’t have any major results. Little did I know, it would become my favorite product of the set and a new staple in my body care routine!

The body exfoliator is a both a physical (gritty) and chemical (use of acids to exfoliate) exfoliator. The body exfoliator comes out of the tube in a gritty gel substance made of bamboo charcoal, pumice, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid to gently exfoliate the skin. It can be used 1-2 times a week.

This product helped my skin significantly which was shocking to me because I thought it was just going to be a fun scrub. I have keratosis pilaris on my arms (red non-acne bumps) that I’ve had for years. When I started using the body exfoliator, I noticed that the KP was significantly less bumpy and red. I am honestly so impressed because I’ve never seen any improvement in my KP with any product before the body exfoliator. 

The skin on the rest of my body feels extremely soft after using the body exfoliator. Before trying this, I would use my homemade coffee scrub about once a month, but now I’ll never go back after trying the body exfoliator! This product is so worth the $30. Well done Nécessaire!

The Body Lotion ($25)

As someone with dry skin living in a dry climate, I usually stick to body butters instead of lotions. Before trying the body lotion, I honestly expected my skin to dry out when I started using this, but it actually kept my skin very well hydrated!

The body lotion uses Vitamin A, Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Omega 6, Omega 9, and Niacinamide to keep the skin healthy. The texture of this lotion is so unique. When you put it in your hand, it has this bouncy, full texture I’ve never seen in any other lotion. When applied to the body, it absorbs very quickly without that greasy lotion feel I know a lot of people hate. 

I ordered the sandalwood set, but they accidentally sent me the fragrance free one. If you are sensitive to fragrances, you would really love this lotion! When I think of fragrance free, clean beauty products, I always think they’ll have a weird veggie-like smell with no perfume added. With the fragrance-free body lotion, this is not the case! It truly has no scent!

In tandem with the body exfoliator, this duo helped my KP a lot and I was so impressed! My first tube lasted me about a month and then I reordered so that I could see how all three products worked together. 

The Body Wash ($25)

Out of all three products, the body wash is the only one I probably wouldn’t buy again. It’s not that the body wash was bad, it just didn’t change my life like the other two did. I liked the body wash, I just didn’t love it.

The body wash is made out of a thin gel that uses marula, cacay, and meadowfoam to gently cleanse the skin. I would say that this body wash is about as thick as a typical gel cleanser that you would use on your face. I like my body washes to be more on the thicker side.

This body wash won an Allure Best of Beauty 2019 award, but I just wasn’t wowed! It’s a gentle cleanser and it works, but I didn’t notice any major differences in my skin when I started using it like I did with the body exfoliator and the body lotion. For now, I’ll stick to my usual body wash from Own Beauty that is significantly more affordable.

Conclusion

Overall, I was really impressed with Nécessaire! When I think of clean beauty products, I usually associate them with not working very well and this was definitely not the case with Nécessaire. I also really love that they use packaging that can be recycled. I think more brands should strive to be like Nécessaire.

In the future, I would love to see a natural deodorant and shaving cream from them. I think it would fit really well within their current line. I also think it would be cool if they had a citrus and a vanilla scent (both unisex of course). This is just some speculation for the future, but again, I overall loved Nécessaire and I’ll definitely be buying from them again!
