Bioré Watery Essence Sunscreen Review

Bioré Watery Essence Sunscreen

I’ve been using the Bioré watery essence sunscreen for years and I must say, this sunscreen made me like sunscreen. I think it’s safe to say that most people hate wearing sunscreen because it’s greasy and smells gross, but this sunscreen is much different than the average American sunscreen. Once you try an Asian beauty sunscreen, you’ll never go back.

Consistency

The Bioré watery essence sunscreen has a consistency lighter than a cream, but thicker than a serum. I apply it everyday (yes, PLEASE WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY!!!) after using the Laneige water bank cream. Like I mentioned earlier, this sunscreen is not greasy like American sunscreens. It dissolves into the skin much a moisturizer does. This formulation includes hyaluronic acid which hydrates the skin as a moisturizing ingredient.

Type of Sunscreen

This sunscreen is a chemical sunscreen which means the carbon compounds in the formula work to absorb UV rays and release them as heat. Like most chemical sunscreens, the Bioré watery essence sunscreen does not leave that dreaded white cast so it is friendly to all skin tones. Just make sure you apply this 20 minutes before sun exposure so your skin is protected from sun damage.

The Bioré watery essence sunscreen has an SPF of 50+ which is great. From what I’ve read, dermatologists typically recommend sunscreens between SPF 30-50 so this is right in that range. When I’m outdoors for prolonged periods of time, I always make sure to reapply every two hours.

Scent

The beauty of Asian sunscreens (this one is Japanese) is that they don’t smell awful like American sunscreens do (boy, do those products smell awful!). This sunscreen has a bit of an alcoholic scent with a hint of lemon. This product does contain alcohol, but it doesn’t dry out my naturally dry skin one bit. I just make sure to always use it with a moisturizer underneath.

How does it perform under makeup?

Another amazing thing about this sunscreen is that it works as a wonderful base for foundation. The Bioré watery essence sunscreen doesn’t pill or peel off when I am applying my makeup. This sunscreen does have a dewy finish (which I like). On no makeup days, sometimes I’ll dust a little of Laura Mercier’s flawless setting powder in my T-zone because I get oily there midday.

Price

Alright, are you ready for this? This amazing sunscreen is only $10! Another reason why I love Asian beauty sunscreens is because they’re so much cheaper than American sunscreens and I like the formulation better. I usually buy 2-3 at a time because they take a long time to ship from Amazon and there’s nothing worse than running out!

Bioré Watery Essence Sunscreen

Overall, I absolutely love this sunscreen, hence why I’ve used it for years. I love the formulation that I get for such a great price. I’ve decided to get out of my comfort zone and try a new sunscreen once this tube runs out. The next sunscreen I’m going to try is the COSRX Snail Mucin sunscreen

What is your favorite sunscreen? Have you ever tried an Asian beauty sunscreen?

JILL! I wasn’t ready for the $10?!?! 😅 That’s a killer price for this! I can’t wait to try it. Now is the best time to test out new skin products. ♥️

I know right?!?! When I started using Asian beauty products, I learned that not all good skin care products have to break the bank! Let me know if you try it 🙂

I really like the Think Face sunscreen. I’ve got to use zinc oxide ones since chemical sunscreens give my face chemical burns.

I haven’t heard of that one! I’ll have to give it a try. I’ve heard that chemical sunscreens cause a burning sensation in sensitive skin types 🙁 I’m sorry that happens to you! I’m glad that you have a sunscreen that works for you!

I’m all in for wearing UV protection every single day! This sounds like such a great product babe, I’m going to put this on my wishlist. Great to know that it doesn’t peel off your face when you apply makeup, ugh I hate when that happens!

Yes wearing sunscreen every day is so important! I hate it when my skin care products peel too! It’s so annoying. Let me know if you try this sunscreen out!

I haven’t tried this before but I am so intrigued! I usually don’t love sunscreens because of the heavy consistency so the fact that this is more watery sounds so appealing to me right now!

You should definitely give it a try! There are a lot of greasy formulas out there D: If you hate goopy sunscreens, I think you would like this one because it isn’t greasy!

I’m guilty of not liking to put sunscreen on! I know it’s so bad, but I just don’t like the smell and texture. This one looks promising though!

I hate that greasy feel of sunscreens. I’ve been using Ultra Violette Queen Screen. It’s very different from the usual, more like a serum and doesn’t have a scent (at least not one I remember detecting). I do like this facial sunscreen because it is very hydrating. My only qualm with it is that it has little crystallised bits throughout (not sure if this is standard or if mine may be faulty?) which really annoy me. Was thinking about trying another brand but it can be such a minefield out there when it comes to sunscreen so thanks for this recommendation. I think I’m going to try this out when my current bottle runs empty!

Let me know if you try this! I’d love to hear your thoughts! Greasy sunscreens are the WORST. I have never heard of the sunscreen you’ve been using, but the serum texture sounds really interesting. The crystallized bits sound really strange! Hopefully it was just that one bottle as opposed to the regular formula…

I’ve heard so many things about Biore before! Such a great brand. It is great that they have a nice consistency without feeling too heavy. They have a lot of protection against the sun! Oh man, I hate some American brands because of their scents! Glad they work well with your skin overall. The key is to find balance. I switched to Asian beauty and it has worked really well for me. Thanks for sharing!

Asian beauty products are truly amazing! You use Shishiedo, right? American sunscreens smell soooo gross. How do they expect people to wear sunscreen and protect their skin when it feels like you’re rubbing greasy slime on your face!? Let me know if you try out the Biore sunscreen 🙂

I love the new trend of watery products… They feel so light! I recently started using No 7’s water gel moisturiser and though I use it at night, I mix in my retinol drops and it doesn’t feel greasy. Lovely post x

    • Jill Gilbert | 7th Apr 20

Me too! This watery sunsceen feels a lot “cleaner” on the skin that a greasy product. Ooooo I have heard good things about No 7, but I haven’t had the chance to try them out for myself.
