This week has certainly been devastating for the United States so I wanted to share some interesting pieces to read, watch, and listen to so we can educate ourselves on the deep racism in our country. Today I’m sharing some articles that can help educate non-black people on the racism happening in our country as well as actions we can take to be an ally to the black community. I’m also sharing some lighter topics and shows in the mix.
I am a half latina, half white woman. I’m not black. I don’t personally know what it’s like to live everyday in fear from the police and the racism they face everyday. I hope through this post I can be an ally to the black community. Silence is not an option.
Remember, No One is Coming to Save Us (The New York Times)- This opinion piece really struck me hard. The main point of the article is that no one is coming to fix racism. Racism has been long ignored by non-black Americans and our leadership has done nothing to help or change that. Racism is not just a black people problem, it’s an everyone problem.
-Roxane Gay, The New York Times
5 Racist Anti-Racism Responses “Good” White Women Give to Viral Posts (KatyKatiKate)- This article goes over seemingly not racist responses that white women gave to the video of white woman, Amy Cooper, calling the cops on Chris Cooper, a black birder. Essentially, responding to videos with blatant racism like this one with responses like “Not all white women are like that” is problematic because it shifts the conversation from the racism Chris Cooper experienced to white women when we need to be talking about Chris Cooper’s experience instead.
From Camping To Dining Out: Here’s How Experts Rate The Risks Of 14 Summer Activities (NPR)- As I’ve adjusted to live at home, the thought of going out into the world has become more anxiety provoking. I really miss being able to just go to Lake Tahoe without having to overthink whether it’s safe. This guide from NPR rates summer activities like going to the beach, getting your haircut, BBQ’s, etc. and explains how safe or risky they are virus-wise.
The easiest way to get involved is to sign petitions demanding justice for George Floyd. I signed this one and it literally took one minute.
Sharing posts on social media certainly helps spread awareness about the issues at hand, but donations can help support people fighting for justice and equality. I donated to Black Lives Matter. There is also a GoFundMe for George Floyd’s family that you can donate to.
Like I said, sharing posts about racism helps spread awareness, but the real change happens by having difficult conversations about the murders, protests, racist behaviors, etc. with your family, friends, coworkers, etc. I know it’s tempting to look away from the tragedies happening in our nation right now, but true change happens by talking and educating yourself.
I can’t stress how important voting is. Voting for people who represent your values is the foundation of democracy. If you’re angry/devastated about what’s happening in our country right now, ELECT CHANGE. Vote for people who stand up for communities that are suffering.
Insecure (HBO)- I talked about Insecure in my 8 thing to do at home while social distancing post, but Insecure’s fourth season came out and it was so good! The show is about a millennial black woman navigating the adult world. The show has really great conversations about racism, relationships, and being an adult. This season focused on friendships drifting apart which is something nobody talks about! We’ve all experienced “friendship breakups” and they’re never easy. Issa Rae, the main actor and producer of the show is such an amazing storyteller.
Avatar the Last Airbender (Netflix)- If you’ve never seen Avatar, it’s now on Netflix to watch for the first time or rewatch! Cullen and I both watched the show as kids so it feels so nostalgic to rewatch the show again. Even though it’s a kids show, it has such an amazing plot that is actually surprisingly deep. Regardless of your age, I can guarantee you’ll love this show! It’s about a boy with powers who can save the world from the reign of the evil fire nation.
Honestly, all the news has been so overwhelming and devastating this week, I have really struggled to find the words to express how I’m feeling. I really hope that all the racist events that have occurred in the last month are a wake up call for our nation that something needs to change. If you don’t know what to say, LISTEN.
Listen to black people who are suffering, listen to your friends and family, just listen and then make different choices that support the black community because this violence is not okay. Ignoring this is not an option. Listen to black stories whether it’s on social media, music, television, etc. Look at the diversity (or lack thereof) in your workplace, schools, city, etc. `
Black Lives Matter.
I really hope you found this edition of read, watch, and listen helpful. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments and have some discussions with you. Sending love to all those who are hurting today <3

I do think it’s important that we talk about it. That’s really how change happens, and it’s good to get things out in the open and try to understand the other’s points of view.

Thank you Margot. I really hope that we are able to make an impact in the world instead of ignoring racism. Too many have died because we’ve ignored the problem at hand.

This is such an interesting article. I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. As you mentioned: go and vote.
Jill Gilbert | 5th Jun 20
Thank you Susanne! People often underestimate the importance of voting. Even though we are just one person voting, it is such a great way to use our voice in a democracy.

Thank you for these. There’s been a lot of negativity in the US lately so I think it’s good for us to look for small ways to help one another and stay positive!

Thanks for speaking up especially during this critical time. We are at an imperative time where we can change the social narrative for year to come.
Thank you so much as this post is really appreciated.

Jill Gilbert | 5th Jun 20
Thank you Omaye. The racism this country was built on cannot continue. Too many have lost their lives for this to be ignored any longer. I really hope the world can change if we all take action!
Natalia | 2nd Jun 20
Racism makes my blood boil. I experienced it in France and the comments being thrown around now are impossible for me to handle. How hard is it for us to be nice to one another? To understand other people suffer too? To acknowledge that we all want the same things in life: safety, happiness, love. Making differences based on race, preconceptions or stereotypes is outrageous.
Jill Gilbert | 5th Jun 20
It’s crazy that racism runs so deep through our societies that it is still so prominent in 2020. I really hope that people take this year to learn about racism and microaggressions that are disrespectful and hurtful to minorities. I hope this is the year for change!

It is really sad and too many have lost their lives because people aren’t willing to talk and learn about the ways racism impacts our society. I really hope that things can change this year.

I can’t believe how things have shifted so quickly the past few days, and for the right reasons. We need to raise our voice against injustice. It is important for us to educate ourselves and speak up! There is so much we can do, even if we are not out physically. We can raise awareness and still donate. More importantly, have those difficult conversations with others. Voting is so important!! WE need more accountable elected officials. Thanks for sharing all of these resources!

Thank you so much for you thoughtful comment, Nancy! I think these last few weeks have shown us how powerful social media is. I’ve always loved seeing fashion, beauty, art, etc. on Instagram, but it’s so inspiring to see how much awareness and impact social media can have on the Black Lives Matter movement and speaking up about human rights. There really is so much action we can take straight from our homes!

Insecure is sooooo good! Once you watch an episode or two, you’ll be hooked. Issa Rae is amazing!
Mica | 7th Jun 20
This is good information to share. I don’t understand the racism as I’ve never had to experience it, but it just means I need to listen harder and be quicker to stand up for others, to share my privilege for good! Because Black Lives Matter.
Hope you are having a lovely weekend! We had a (small, due to restrictions) party for my son’s birthday yesterday, it was really fun 🙂
Jill Gilbert | 7th Jun 20
Thank you Mica! I am so glad you are planning to use your privelage for good and stand up for others. A lot of white people don’t think racism is their problem because it doesn’t affect them, but it is so important for EVERYONE to use their voice! I hope your son’s birthday party was a fun and wonderful day 🙂

lots of love, Miri

Jill Gilbert | 7th Jun 20
Thank you Miri! That is so kind of you to say 🙂 A lot of white people would rather discount Black people’s stories of the racism they have encountered instead of listening and learning what they have to say.
Clarissa | 7th Jun 20
Thank you for using your platform to educate and spread awareness. As a non-black POC also, I felt like I wasn’t educated or important enough so speak up but by being silent, we only choose to side against the oppressor. I’ve learnt how important it is to be anti-racist than just not racist. I hope the protests haven’t been too violent in the US
splasheswithfabulosity.blogspot.com
Jill Gilbert | 7th Jun 20
Thank you Clarissa! It’s hard not to feel paralyzed when we don’t know what the right thing to say is, but it is so important that we use our voices as non-black POC to support the black community and create change in the world! This violence can’t continue any longer! The protests have been pretty violent here, but for the most part, I think they have been peaceful. After the peaceful protest in my city, white people started smashing the walls of city hall 🙁 The police chief said the white people who were vandalizing weren’t even from our city, they were from out of state 🙁
Naya | 7th Jun 20
Wonderful article here, Jillian! I love that you have listed and linked so many useful and informative sources for others to discover. It has been quite an emotional week for all of us I feel. I am glad that people are now openly talking about their experiences; it is particularly important to share this information with kids as education about racism should always start within a family I feel. Thanks for posting this xx

Jill Gilbert | 7th Jun 20
Thank you Naya! It really has been an emotional week. It’s hard to see so many people suffering because of the systematic racism that the United States and other countries that were colonized have created. That is so true about having these conversations about race with our families and kids. People aren’t born being racist, they learn it from their parents.

It’s definitely been very emotional, sad, and enraged here in the United States. I really hope that all the murders of innocent Black people are put to a stop now that people are paying attention. This certainly is a historic year!
